Whatprocess did the committee follow for hearing submissions relating to Māori representation?

CarterHon JOHN CARTER (Chairperson of the Auckland Governance Legislation Committee) Link to this

The committee received 2,538 submissions from interested groups and individuals. A subcommittee heard evidence in all seven Auckland districts, including Great Barrier Island and Waiheke Island, and on three marae in the Auckland region.

What integrity does the process have, given that the submissions have been overridden by his Government?

SmithMr SPEAKER Link to this

The first part of the question was fine in asking about the integrity of the process, but asking what the Government might have done is irrelevant to the responsibilities of the chair of the committee. That is outside the Standing Orders, and that brings to a conclusion questions for oral answer.

I raise a point of order, Mr Speaker. You ruled that the first part of the question was in order, so maybe the chairperson could answer the first part.

SmithMr SPEAKER Link to this

I have already concluded question time. I think that members asking questions of chairs need to be a bit more careful about their supplementary questions. I think I have been fairly tolerant of that today.
