What action is the Government taking to reduce barriers to information and services currently faced by deaf New Zealanders?

DysonHon RUTH DYSON (Minister for Disability Issues) Link to this

I am pleased to announce the third reading and expected passage of the New Zealand Sign Language Bill set down for this afternoon, confirming New Zealand Sign Language as an official language. This will represent a significant milestone for the Deaf community, which has spent 20 years lobbying for recognition of its language and culture.

How will New Zealand Sign Language reduce the barriers to information and services for deaf New Zealanders?

The immediate practical effect of the bill, once passed, will be to provide people with the right to use and access New Zealand Sign Language in legal proceedings, including in court. The bill also sets out principles to guide Government departments in their use of New Zealand Sign Language.
